Shetland Anger Over " Poaching" Claim
SHELLFISHERMEN in Shetland are up in arms over claims that an English-registered crabber has allegedly been in breach of the islands' inshore fisheries management system for the second time within a year.
The 24-metre Devon-registered Amadeus TH7 was reportted to have been seen fishing for crab close inshore and fishers claim she was within the area of the Shetland Regulating Order.
But project-officer with the Lerwick-based Shetland Shellfish Management Organisation (SSMO), Campbell Jamieson said there was not much he could do to force the Amadeus beyond the 6-mile limit.
As the Regulating Order is policed by "community enforcement," the Scottish Fisheries Protection Agency (SFPA) has so far declined to board vessels and check licences.
