FAL get no response to Committee offer
Published:  30 April, 2008

Committee will visit Peterhead fish market

THE Fishermen's Association (FAL) said today they had received no response to their offer to participate in a Lords committee hearing tomorrow at Peterhead chaired by former Scottish fisheries Minister Lord Sewel.

FAL secretary Roddy McColl said that on February 21, FAL submitted detailed evidence to the House of Lords EU Sub Committee carrying out a review of the Common Fisheries Policy and which is taking evidence tomorrow at Peterhead and FAL offered to follow that up with oral evidence. "That offer has not yet been accepted despite the ideal opportunity for doing so presenting itself at tomorrow’s Committee meeting in Peterhead," Mr McColl added.

"After all, Lord Sewel has stated that the Committee’s evidence taking is an opportunity to hear from people with direct experience of working with the CFP.

"Clearly he does not wish to hear the truth.

"Fortunately the First Minister and Cabinet Secretary to whom we sent our submission agree with much of what FAL has said and our comment that the CFP is not a system designed to ensure responsible fisheries management has had particular resonance with them."
