WHITBY'S fish and chip shops have helped the town land an English 'Tourism Oscar'.
The North Yorkshire town was voted by consumers as the 'Best Day Out' at the Enjoy England Awards, held in Liverpool last night.
Consumers who voted for Whitby said walks on the beach, paddling in the sea and dining on fish and chips - "the freshest you'll get anywhere" - were some of the highlights of a day out in the town.
The Enjoy England Awards for Excellence 2008 were celebrated at St Georges Hall, Liverpool.
Now in their 19th year, the awards are affectionately known as the ‘Tourism Oscars’. They promote healthy industry competition and high standards, helping to ensure England's place as a world-class destination.

Should there be a nationally backed plan to develop the UK cod farming sector?
