Scots salmon jobs go in Lighthouse Caledonia restructure
Published:  16 April, 2008

Odd Geir Oddsen

SCOTTISH salmon farmer Lighthouse Caledonia has today confirmed it is to shed up to a fifth of its employees in a move designed to see annual operational performance improve by over £1million from next year.

The company says the reorganisation will help it realise its future growth ambitions and ensure the long-term sustainability of the business in Scotland.

Lighthouse Caledonia was created during the autumn of 2007 after a merger of the former Pan Fish Scotland, Fjord Seafood Scotland and entities from Marine Harvest’s operations in Scotland.

During the course of 2008, it is anticipated that the number of employees will be reduced by about 15–20%. Lighthouse Caledonia currently employs 356 people in Scotland. The reductions will occur across all parts of the business and in all locations. Investment opportunities to improve production efficiencies will also be explored.

Commenting, OddGeir Oddsen, managing director, said: “We clearly regret that some jobs will be lost, but the long term benefits will ensure the sustainability of the business in Scotland.

“Following the merger last year, it became clear that we needed to become more market orientated and therefore we have had to review the organisational structure.

“While understanding that reducing the number of staff will be difficult, the reorganisation will put the company in a stronger position and improve its position in the highly competitive international marketplace.”

Lighthouse Caledonia will produce approximately 22,000 tonnes of salmon in 2008, with production forecast to increase to 30,000 tonnes by 2010. The focus will continue to be on promoting the strong

Scottish brand.
