Chile: Conference to focus on growth challenges
Published:  26 March, 2008

THE IV AQUA SUR International Conference, due to commence today in Puerto Varas (X Region), will focus on "The challenges of growth".

The conference takes place a time when the Chilean salmon farming industry is facing what has been described by leading industry players as "severe" biological challenges.

Dr Albert Tacon, a world-renowned expert in aquaculture nurturing, and illness control in the United States, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, will give a lecture entitled 'Context of the tendencies in fish nurturing. The new food industry in a more competitive context'.

Having previously worked for the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation, Dr Tacon is currently technical director of aquaculture development with Aquatic Farms in Hawaii. He is also part of the WAS Members Association and the American Feed Industries Association, and is a member of the Technical Committee of the United States Department of Agriculture. He also participates in the Centre for Tropical Aquaculture and is a researcher at the University of Hawaii.

Today's conference opening session was due to commence with an overview of the global aquaculture industry, presented by Audun Lem of the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations).

Issues specific to Chile's salmon farming industry were also set to be discussed.

The AQUA SUR 2008 Conference is organised by Fundación Chile with Corfo as co-organiser.
