A FISHERMEN'S leader has contended that the fishing industry, far from declining, is in fact evolving.
Alan McCulla, chief executive of the Anglo-North Irish Fish Producers' Organisation who is in the third month of a six month tour of fishing ports across England and Wales, on behalf of the National Federation of Fishermen's Organisations,(NFFO), was in Yorkshire last week.
He said: “Again, I found that the same issues are affecting fishermen, no matter where they are along the coast – fuel prices, under 10 metre quota, the angling lobby, the Marine Bill, wind farms, aggregate extraction and seals, as well as other issues. And, again I met fishermen who have been able to overcome these problems, either by forming an association, or by supporting their PO’s work to represent them. Fishermen need to unite, because when they do, they succeed. The industry is not in decline, it is evolving.”
He will be spending a full week in Cornwall and Devon, from March 17 – 21, visiting fishermen in Newlyn, Plymouth, Looe, Bideford as well as other ports. All local fishermen, both members of the NFFO, and non members, whether over 10 metres or under 10 metres are welcome. Local fishermen will be notified by their representatives of meeting times/locations or can call Julia Dennison on 01904 635430 to arrange a meeting with him.
