Thirteen of the UK’s top Young Fish Friers, including four of the finalists of this year’s Drywite/NFFF Young Fish Frier of the Year competition (YFFY), recently enjoyed a study trip to Amsterdam hosted by top frying range supplier KFE.
Dean Chappelhow, Leigh Foster, Carlyn Kearney and Cem Oktem made up the numbers from this year’s YFFY final and were joined by previous winners Raymond Fusco, Dan Harding, Craig Buckley and Zohaib Hussain along with Young Friers, Ashley Roberts, Stewart Quinney, Richard Ord Jr and Sam Oliver. Briar and Ken Wilkinson of Drywite came along to offer their support as sponsor/founders of the Young Fish Frier of the Year Award. Paul and Aviy Williams and Marketing Director Tanya Henderson represented KFE, with Thomas Pick of the NFFF also joining the group.
The trip offered a unique opportunity to see behind the scenes at the state of the art QBTEC facility, the birthplace of Kiremko ranges along with other well-known frying brands such as Perfecta and Smitto. With QBTEC Sales Director Oscar Muis and Owner Gijs Okkerman on hand to show the group around the 2000 m2 factory, seeing the production line and equipment in action helped the Young Friers understand the precision planning and engineering that goes into building both standard and high efficiency range’s. A highlight was seeing the recently installed €1,000,000 laser cutter.
Following the factory tour the group then visited two local food outlets to see Kiremko ranges in action. First up was a visit to a traditional Dutch cafeteria ‘Family Lisse’, sampling the local, deep fried, speciality ‘Snacks’ and then to a specialist fish restaurant and delicatessen ‘Volendammer Visspecialist Henry Schilder’ where they got to sample fish and chips Dutch style.
After an interesting and educational day the evening provided a chance to socialise with a meal at ‘The Sea Palace’, a floating Chinese restaurant, before the group headed out to experience the sights and sounds of the Dutch capital.
The trip was the latest factory visit to be arranged in association with Drywite as a reward for the Young Friers who reach the final of the YFFY competition. The winner will be announced at the 2013 National Fish & Chip Awards ceremony which will be held at the prestigious Lancaster London Hotel in London on the 24th January 2013.
