TV chefs put spotlight on Norwegian cod and Grimsby

TWO celebrity chefs have helped put the spotlight on Grimsby's fishing sector and Norway's huge sustainable fish quotas and then beamed it to millions of UK TV viewers.

Both Grimsby and Norwegian cod were featured on the popular BBC programme Saturday kitchen - and it was thanks to a chance meeting with former Grimsby trawler skipper John Hancock, who now runs Carisma UK, the British arm of Carisma Fish AS in Norway and award winning chef Cyrus Todiwala.
 
John was at the Seafood Training School at Billingsgate Fish Market recently to demonstrate the qualities of Norwegian cod and haddock to a class of more than 30 chefs from the capital. Among them was Cyrus Todiwala who owns the award winning Cafe Spice restaurants in London.
 
John, who brings Norwegian cod the UK through Grimsby,  said: "Cyrus told me he had not used cod for some time because he thought it was an endangered species. When I informed him that the Barents Sea, shared by Norway and Russia, will have a cod quota of almost one million tons next year, and a haddock quota of 275,000 tons he was both surprised and delighted.
 
"He then told me he was going abandon his planned recipe when he appeared on the Saturday Kitchen programme a few days later and use our Norwegian cod instead."

The programme is hosted by another popular TV chef in James Martin, who spoke about fish and Grimsby.

Cyrus told viewers about the sustainability of Norwegian cod and used it to make two dishes on the programme. On the tasting panel was Scottish and Hollywood actress Ashley Jensen and New Zealand celebrity chef Annabel Langbein.

John Hancock told Fishupdate: "I was delighted with the way things have turned out. We are now getting the message about sustainable cod and haddock to the nation in a big way."
