It is the first time that the Directorate has voiced such strong opinion in favour of stopping the fishing for species listed on the official ranking of threatened marine species, reports The Norway Post.

Last year the fisheries authorities allowed the catch of 22,000 tonnes of coastal cod, against the advice of marine scientists.

"These fisheries ought to be stopped altogether," says head of the the Directorate for Nature Management, Janne Sollie.

The Directorate for Nature Management is a national body that has the scientific responsibility for managing the Norwegian countryside. It is responsible to the Ministry of Environment on matters concerning nature management.
