Dorset Seafood Festival to raise awareness of key issues
Published:  17 March, 2008

The Fishermen's Mission is the festival's main beneficiary

THE Dorset Seafood Festival, which is set to take place from July 12-13 at Brewers Quay Weymouth, will celebrate the county’s inseparable links with the sea, the fishing communities and explore the journey our seafood takes from ‘Sea to Plate’.

Chairman of the Harbour Traders Association, and the Dorset Seafood Festival committee, Roger Dalton says: “We are tremendously excited to be hosting such a major seafood event in Weymouth’s historic Waterfront and we hope to build its significance in the years to come.”

Over the weekend of July 12 and 13, the area around the harbour will be transformed into a Seafood Village. Many different species of fish and shellfish will be landed straight from the boats, prepared and cooked in the open, before being available to feed festival visitors. Family orientated, the festival will also entertain its visitors with live music, demonstrations and displays throughout the day.

The organisers are confident that it will attract in excess of 60,000 visitors over the weekend.

Already, several influential organisations have agreed to attend and a number of celebrities have shown an interest in attending.

The event aims to:

. Promote seafood in the interests of the Nation’s health;

· Encourage people, especially young people, to eat more fish;

· Promote sustainability;

· Support the fishing industry; and

· Promote Weymouth Old Harbour & Waterfront as a centre of excellence for Seafood.

The Festival is being organised by the Harbour Traders Association in Weymouth with the support of the Dorset Coast Forum, Seafish and The Royal National Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen, which will be the main beneficiary. It is a part of the Spirit of the Sea Maritime Festival, which takes place between July 5 and 13.
