Shetland Seafood Auctions shortlisted for work experience award

SHETLAND Seafood Auctions has been short-listed by the National Council for Work Experience for an annual award that recognises employers who create valuable work experience for students.

The recognition follows Shetland Seafood Auctions hosting Emily Garrick, a second year student at Edinburgh University, to undertake a marketing project as part of the Shell Step programme last year and the more recent appointment of Suzanne Manson on a graduate placement programme assisting with promotion and marketing.

Shetland Seafood Auction manager, Martin Leyland said: “I am pleased that the company has been short-listed for this prestigious award and I very much look forward to attending the event in London on March 12 at which the winners will be announced.

“The recognition follows our appointment of a Shell Step student, Emily Garrick last summer. Emily not only undertook a highly successful project for the auction, she went on to win Shell Step’s Most Enterprising Student in Shetland, then Scotland and Northern Ireland, before becoming a finalist in the overall UK final.

“The success achieved through Emily’s appointment then led Shetland Seafood Auction to appoint another trainee. Suzanne Manson joined the company in December 2007 on a one-year graduate placement programme through the Shetland Fisheries Training Centre Trust to assist with marketing and promotions.

“We very much appreciate the value that projects such as these can offer. In particular, the experience of working in a real work environment on real projects is a crucial part of an individual’s development.”
