Seafood Fortnight aims to build on the success of Seafood Week as a claimed popular fixture in the food and drink calendar, with all sectors of the industry getting involved.

The ‘2 a week’ theme will encourage everybody to eat the recommended two portions of seafood a week, one of which should be rich in omega-3 oils. Participating businesses will show how easy it is to eat ‘2 a week’ sustainably with the wide variety of different species we have to choose from. There will also be a focus on how simple it is to cook with – when you know how – as well as how delicious and nutritious it is.

Chris Stevens, commercial manager at Seafish said: “We carried out extensive industry market research. Feedback showed a desire to extend to a fortnight, to maximise the effect of promotional activities. It also highlighted the possibility of linking up with Hay's Galleria Oyster and Seafood Fair, which brought the event forward to September.

“We are encouraging all sectors of the seafood industry to get involved and give their backing to the event to help make it a success and secure its future as an annual event in the food and drink calendar.”

Taking part in Seafood Fortnight is easy and there are plenty of activities that can help drive business and raise awareness in the local area.

Alan Swinson, catering director at Macdonald Hotels said: “Seafood Week 2007 was a huge success for us and provided a great opportunity to showcase our seafood dishes to customers.

Extending it to a fortnight means more opportunities to drive home our provenance and quality messages and profile our restaurants and chefs.”
