Salmon feed ingredient boosts dog sled team's chances
Published:  29 February, 2008

Kjetil Backen

WITH the world's toughest dog sled race, Iditarod, due to begin in Alaska tomorrow, a Norwegian musher is using the same immune stimulating feed ingredient as the salmon farming industry to boost his chances of success.

Before and during the 10 day-race, Kjetil Backen of Team Norway will feed his dogs MacroGard® to strengthen their immunity and general performance. MacroGard® is a wholly purified beta glucan extracted from baker’s yeast. Salmon farmers and livestock producers all over the world use it to reduce mortalities and increase the yields in the productions.

Backen is participating in his third Iditarod, having been placed 10th in 2002 and 3rd in 2004. He is also known for having laid the race strategy when his teammate Robert Sørlie of Team Norway won the Iditarod twice in 2003 and 2005.

Iditarod is a meeting point for the best dogs and the leading mushers of the world. They gather in Anchorage for a ten day race, fighting permafrost and Arctic temperatures, hunting for the up front pack on the ice of the Yukon River.
