A COUPLE who run a Whitby fish restaurant have this week launched a unique initiative to help recruit a new generation of young deep sea fishermen.
Rob and Emma Green have decided that because their future depends on a strong UK fishing industry, they are going to initiate, develop and financially sponsor a new website for the Whitby and District Fish Industry Training School.
Rob, who runs the award winning Greens restaurant in the port with his wife, told FISHupdate.com: "We buy most of our fish for our business from the local trawler fleet, so we feel the need to put something back into the industry.
"If we do not train young trawlermen for the future we will have no-one to carry on. Since we opened our restaurant a few years ago we have become aware of the need for the industry to have new lifeblood."
The couple have built up strong links with the Whitby Fishing Industry Training School, which can handle up to 20 students at any one time. They come to learn fishing skills from across the country, although most are from the East Coast, including Yorkshire and the Humber.
Fishing training school chief executive, Anne Hornigold said: "Rob and Emma have always supported our school. They take great interest in our progress and keep in constant touch with us. It's great to be associated with them."
www.fishupdate.com is published by Special Publications. Special Publications also publish FISHupdate magazine, Fish Farmer, the Fish Industry Yearbook, the Scottish Seafood Processors Federation Diary, the Fish Farmer Handbook and a range of wallplanners.
